???????? The Other Woman Episode Thirty Eight:
By morning, mama had already been discharged, just as the doctor had said and she was sitting in the back seat, behind Nkem and her husband, as they drove home.
She woke up to find herself on the hospital bed, and had been both surprised and worried, afraid that something serious could be wrong with her.
“Mama, you know I’ll tell you if there’s any reason to worry. Believe me, the doctor said you just passed out because you were worrying too much” Joe told her, when she kept asking to be told what exactly was wrong with her.
But she was only able to relax, after Nkem put in some words too, begging her not to worry so much about anything.
“Were you able to reach the pregnant girl?” she asked all of a sudden, as their car continued to glide along the tarred road, towards their house.
The couple exchanged worried glances, recalling than they had both agreed to ensure that mama didn’t have to see reasons to worry about Farida and Max.
“Oh yes. I was told they travelled to see Farida’s father” Joe said tersly, his grip on the steering wheel, getting tighter
“Wonderful! So they are already looking for ways to get their union legal, when they are yet to sort things out with the people, whose lives they have tried to mess up?
“Remind me Joe, but does she have the right, by law, to get married to another person, when she’s still married to you?” mama asked her son.
“Actually mama, I was told they wanted an elderly person to be with them when they come to ask me to let her go be with the father of her unborn child, and to inform me officially, that the child is actually not mine” Joe lied to his mother, not knowing how to tell her that Farida and Max, had gone missing, without making her worry some more.
Very early that morning, he had called to know the situation of things, and didn’t know whether to be happy or to get more worried with the report the officer gave him.
“All the boys on the mission had been captured, with some of them falling in the course of exchange of gûn shots between them and my men.
“But their leader was nowhere to be found, same as their target and his companion.
“I had my boys searching for them in the neighbourhood, and even had to expand my perimeter, but we were unable to get Stone and the kids” the police officer had told Joe.
“My God! What does this mean? Could they have been taken away from the crìmè scene before your boys arrived?” Joe asked the officer, who said he wasn’t quite sure of what had happened.
“I am still trying to wrap my hands around all that is playing out in this case. We’ll continue with investigations, and let you know whatever comes up later” he told Joe, and hung up.
Joe and Nkem continued to analyze the situation with Amarachi and Ben, and in time, Ben came up with some points.
“Could they have been captured and taken away by Stone, before the police arrived?” Nkem asked
“If they had already been captured and taken away by Stone, I do not see any reason his boys still had to make an appearance, and put up the fight the fight they put up with the police.
“Their boss didn’t sound like he needed to be in the picture, from how carefully, he had already made the plans for the operation. So he could have chosen to stay back and wait for the boys to do the dìrty work.
“But the question is, where are they? Where is Farida and Max? Why did they choose to go offline, at this time?
“Is it possible that they had coincidentally both gone off because their phones ran out of battery?
“Isn’t it so much of a coincidence that they both went dark, on the very night that they were targets of a notorious àssassin?” Ben asked.
“You are so right Ben. If the target was already out of location, the boys had no reason to make the attempts that they made” Joe concurred.
They talked and deliberated on the matter, until they came to the conclusion, that since Mandy mentioned Farida’s father when she called Farida that night, the two lovers may have gone to see Farida’s dad.
But there was no way Joe was going to tell his mother that they were only making postulations and trying to assume this, from that!
He was happy though that he had been able to quench his mother’s curiosity, and she was back to talking about the things she wanted to get before Nkem out to bed.
Before they left, Ben told Joe and Nkem to go on, promising to bring Amarachi home, when he was done with what the hospital’s MD asked him to help fix with the CCTV cameras for a particular section of the hospital.
So after they left, he went down to work, trying to sort out the things his boss needed him to do, before he left.
Amarachi was surfing the internet, keeping herself busy while she waited for Ben.
“Wait! Wait!! I hope this isn’t what I think it is?” Ben screàmed suddenly, and got Amarachi clearly startled.
“What is it Ben? You’re making me afraid. What are you looking at your screen as if your have just seen something terrifying?” Amarachi asked, getting up to join Ben on his table.
“Amara, it is Farida and Max! They’re here in this hospital, and I don’t think their conditions look good” Ben said.
Amarachi rushed to Ben’s sides, took a peek at the screen and covered her mouth in time, to prevent the screàm from escaping her throat.
“What could have happened to them? Jesus! Are they going to be okay?” Amarachi asked.
“I wouldn’t know! And there’s only one way to find out. We’ll go to the emergency unit and know what’s going on” Been said, getting up quickly.
He dialed Joe’s number as he moved, knowing that he needed to update both him and Nkem on want was going on.
“Hello Sir, I just found Farida and Max. They’re both in the hospital here, but their conditions are really unsightly” Ben told him in a summary.
“Okay Ben, tell the man I’ll be interested in the deal, and I’m sure my wife would like to take a look at the items too.
“But I just arrived my house now. I’ll settle mama, then head out to take a look at the goods with my wife” Joe answered quickly, his facial expressions, remaining as controlled as he wouldn’t have imagined he could keep it.
He got mama into her room and asked the house keeper to take care of mama, before he rushed out with Nkem, heading to the hospital again.
“Nkem, I know you already know that we’re not truly going to see any goods.
“Ben just found the kids, and they’re in the hospital. But you have to take a grip if yourself.
“Ben said they’re not in good shape, but I think you deserve to see them, and know if there’s anything we can do for them.
“I do not need to remind you that you have to remember that you’re first a mother to be, before any other thing.
“Do not act recklessly because worrying so much won’t change anything.
“Remember that worrying is like a rock chair. It keeps moving, but goes nowhere. Please do not put my unborn child to any risk with your reactions because in the end, the reactions won’t be the reason they get better or otherwise” he told his wife, who only nodded and continued to blink rapidly to keep the tears back.
When they got to the hospital, Ben was waiting to take them to the emergency ward.
And true to what Ben had said, Farida and Ben were both lying on their respective beds, still unconscious and looking really bãd.
Joe and Ben assessed the situation, and in no time, they could see that apart from the first aid to stop the blêêdings, nothing much had been done for them.
Ben called the shots, and the doctors were scurrying everywhere, and Nkem was sitting outside the ward, praying the help didn’t come too late for Max and Farida.
