???????? Romeo And Violet Chapter Five:
I wasn’t shocked because I knew it was going to happen sooner than later. I was however depressed and hated myself to have put my parents in a situation like that. I told my brother that I need to pack my books. He mounted his bicycle and left. I went back to class, got my things ready and went home. When I got home, I couldn’t find my mum. I was told she had gone back to the village already. I changed into a regular dress immediately and went to the village.
When I got to our village home, I met my dad sitting in his favourite sofa in the living room. He was reading a book and when he saw me, he stopped reading, removed his reading glasses and motioned me to sit down.
“Good evening, Dad.”
“Good evening, my son. How are you?”
“I am good, dad. How are you, too?”
“I am alive and that is enough for me.”
“Where’s mum?” I asked.
“She went out to see someone. I know you came because of the issue at hand. Now, tell me the truth. Are you responsible for the pregnancy?”
“I don’t know, dad. It’s possible because the rubber punctured during one of the times we were making out. So, I really don’t know. It depends on how old the pregnancy is.” I explained to my dad.
“Let me advise you, Son. If you are responsible for it, and you are sure you are the one, then accept the pregnancy. Don’t be afraid. Have you heard?”
“Yes, dad.”
“Good”
Just then, my mum walked in. I greeted her but she ignored me. She instead told my father that the Violet’s parents said they would be coming to see us at 6:00 PM. She told my dad to be prepared because we didn’t know what the outcome would be. My dad was an easy going man and things like that didn’t worry him.
It was a about a few minutes past six o’clock when the small delegation of Violet’s family showed up. Her elder brother refused to come. Instead, it was her elder brother’s wife and two of their neighbours who came with her. My mum offered seats to them and they made themselves comfortable. The first person to speak was my father.
“I welcome you all to my home. What we are about to talk about involves children; children who are still teenagers. Therefore, I pray that whatever we discuss here, we should bear that in mind that, we were once all kids and things like these are not uncommon.”
Everyone agreed.
Before he could continue, the wife of Violet’s elder brother intervened and asked that we pray first. Everyone agreed. After we had prayed, the meeting proper began.
“Now, Mister.” That was my mum talking. “Do you know this girl here?” She was talking about Violet.
“Yes, mum.”
“Have you been dating her?”
“Yes, mum”
“How many times have you people slept together?”
“Two times, but I used con…”
“Shut up!” My mum shouted “No one has asked you what you used. At your young age, you are already sleeping with girls and you are not even ashamed of yourself.”
I stayed quiet.
“Where is the Massa?” It was Violet’s aunt talking. “Why are you hiding behind there? Go and meet your wife. I thought you people were adults and could do adult things?”
I was asked to go and sit by her. I went there grudgingly. I was bare body and was heavily reprimanded for that. I went into the bedroom and got a T-Shirt.
“Now, you have heard your son, Madam.” Violet’s aunt said. “So, what can you say?”
“How old is the pregnancy?” My mum asked.
“Six months.”
“But my son said they had been dating for just four months. That means he cannot be the one responsible.” My mum argued.
There was total pandemonium as a huge quarrel had broken out. There were accusations and counter accusations and the whole place was in an uproar. I felt so bad that I had to make my parents go through that. My dad tried to call the women to order to no avail. They were busy contesting whose voice would rise high above the other.
Finally, my dad succeeded to calm everyone down and it was agreed that the meeting would be postponed to another day. Violet’s relations all left, walking in a single file and talking amongst themselves. I was asked to go back to the city that same evening because I had to be in school the next day.
The long-awaited meeting had come and gone. I felt a bit relieved but there were some things that bothered my mind. Firstly, why didn’t Violet’s elder brother, who was like a father to him, come to the meeting? Secondly, why did Violet’s aunt propose that we pray in a meeting like that? Thirdly, why didn’t my mother scold me like I had feared she would? I was someone who liked to look at things critically. As a result, my mind was deeply disturbed by those questions and I wanted answers to them.
Two days later, my mum came to the city. She said she had done her investigations and had been told that Violet was already pregnant even before we met. I didn’t know who to believe, so, I decided to let my mum handled the wahala while I concentrated on my exams which were around the corner. I decided that I would stay away for the village for as long as possible. I didn’t want to have any more confrontations with either Violet or her family.
Haven made that decision, I put the whole thing behind me and hoped my mum handled everything in my stead. But that was not to be. A week later, I was reliably informed that Violet’s elder brother and his wife had both been transferred to the city. That meant Violet was coming to live in the city where our paths would most likely cross again. Why did life decide to treat me like that?
