???? Cacophonous Melody Episode Five: ????
Bruce drove out of the compound and headed to Port Harcourt, where he lived and worked.
He had told his mother that he was returning to his base, after his marriage ceremony with Tracy ended the way it did, and his mother didn’t want to hear a thing about going to Tracy’s house ever again.
Talking to his mother, or trying to make her understand that he didn’t have the ability to stay away from Tracy was going to result in more tròubles, so he decided to agree with her, and make his own moves behind her back.
Bruce was so sure she’d be able to get Tracy to return to Port Harcourt with him when he drove towards her father’s compound that day.
And she would have truly been able to return with him, because he had convinced her of the need to change environment, and also get to see a therapist.
But her mother showed up and said things about her having to go to some shrine before she’d be able to leave for the city with him.
He was sad that she didn’t leave with him, but took consolation in the fact that he was able to reach a reasonable conclusion with Tracy’s father about how to make Tracy his wife.
He drove straight to his house, and began to make preparations for a party he had hoped to attend with Tracy.
His organization was having their end of the year gala and award night, and he made arrangements to attend the party with his newly wedded wife, before they proceeded on their honeymoon.
After their marriage ceremony ended the way it did, Bruce thought of a lot of things, and he knew that he wasn’t going to let any of his colleagues have a hint of what happened, when he was not ready to let the girl go.
So he drove to her community, to get her to accompany him to the party, then stay for sometime with him to enable her get some medical evaluation.
But with her mother making it impossible for Tracy to go with him, Bruce prepared to attend the gala night with Drake, determined not to let anyone know what had happened.
Drake, his friend and colleague, tried to talk him into trying to look at the issue from his mother’s point of view, as they drove towards the venue of the party.
“What are you even saying Drake? Is it remotely possible for someone to go on without his heart? That girl has my heart in her hands. There’s nothing I can do about it!
“I’ve told you Drake, this girl affects me like no one else has ever done. I can’t stay without her because not only does the imagination of me having to stay without her by my sides make me find it hard to breathe, the thoughts of someone else being the one she wakes up beside every morning, makes my heart nearly fail, each time I think about it.
“I am not leaving her, and I will never leave her. Not after all the promises I have made her” Bruce told his friend.
“Wait oh Bruce, are you okay? Like, are you sure you haven’t been placed inside any spiritual bottle?
“How can you have witnessed what we witnessed yesterday, and still be sounding like this?
“You have to be thankful that my mother didn’t give birth to you, or she would have slapped out the charms from your eyes by now” Drake told Bruce, trying to focus on the road, even though his friend’s thought pattern was giving him serious concerns.
“Well, thank God she isn’t, because she would have slapped till her hand gets sore.
“Drake, I can’t believe that you of all people, don’t understand me. I love this girl Drake! How am I supposed to imagine a future without her?
“That girl has been through so much, and you and I know that something has to be done to help her” Bruce said.
“Oh, and you Bruce, are the messiah, right? You’re the one who’ll save her from all that she has been going through?
“You know me Bruce, I don’t know how to keep things that bother me to myself.
“It’s becoming worrisome, how you’re bent on sticking to Tracy, when you have so many better options.
“It’s insàne Bruce, and kinda makes me believe that what girl is doing is truly beyond what we imagined she was doing
”Because, if she hasn’t Bewitched you, why will you choose her over Samantha and Juliet in the first place?
“How can you choose the one whom we all know is the least in the available options, and now have to face spiritual problems in addition?” Drake asked his friend, looking at him in a way that showed his displeasure.
“Define better option Drake! Tell me what makes a woman a better option than the other.
“No, don’t look out the window, since you know what’s best for me, and you know what I want in a woman, why don’t you tell me the universal yardstick for determining who’s the best option for a man!
“I know my mother made you do all these you’re doing, and the only reason she got you to do this, is because she knows you’re the only one who can speak to me in this manner, about the woman I love, and not get to feel how my knuckles feel on someone’s nose ridge” Bruce said.
“Oh so you can still make exceptions? You should have hit me already Bruce. Go ahead and hit me.
“Granted, your mum asked me to speak to you about it, but you know that aside her concerns for Tracy’s spiritual problems, I have never supported the idea of choosing her over Samantha.
“For God’s sake Bruce, Samantha is not just rich in gold, that girl is the bòmb!
“She’s got the curves and the killèr-look that every man in his right senses would like to consider before choosing a village girl, just because of a pretty face.
“Samantha is pretty. She is classy, and well groomed. It will not be a problem for her to fit into your social circle because she is a socialite, herself” Drake told him.
“Do you honestly think you’re going to be able to irk me with those silly statements?
“If she’s a bush girl, and she’s the one for me, do you think I’ll care whose ox is gored when I make her mine, no matter what?
“You see why I told you that you can’t determine who is a better option for another man?
“You noticed how attractive and whatever else Samantha is, but I didn’t. Or would I say, I don’t care?
“Drake, we are wired in different ways. What triggers my adrenaline must not compulsorily trigger yours.
“I don’t find Samantha captivating enough to wish to go to bed every night with her in my arms, and wake up every morning, with her by my sides.
“And come to think of it, Samantha is more physically endowed than Patricia your fiancé.
“Why don’t you switch to her? I promise to sponsor the wedding and ensure that you two have the best honeymoon yet” Bruce said, looking at his friend with all seriousness.
“And what’s that supposed to mean? Did I tell you Samantha is my kind of woman?
“Wait Bruce, are you intentionally insulting my woman because I’m trying to look out for you?
“How can you talk about my fiancé like that? Did I ever tell you I wasn’t contented with how much our maker has endowed her?” Drake said, fuming.
Bruce began to laugh uncontrollably, shaking his head as he spoke.
“You know my friend, it’s funny how people who dish out hot plates, can’t take even warm dishes themselves.
“You have called my woman, the woman that should be my wife as we speak, unprintable names, and made annoying comparisons, but I have swallowed them all, because I know that your opinion doesn’t really make her who you say she is.
“But stating the obvious about your fiancé’s physical appearance is making you as edgy as a dog that has it’s tail in the mouth of another dog” Bruce said, forcing himself to refrain from getting very àngry with his friend.
“You damn well know this is different. You were the one dating Samantha, not me.
“If she wasn’t your type of woman, you shouldn’t have ever asked her to be your girlfriend” his friend argued.
“Thank God you know I asked her to be my girlfriend, not my wife!
“I am particularly glad that from the very day we started dating, we were frank to ourselves, and we both knew what we were doing with each other.
“I don’t know why you’re the one swallowing the pills for another man’s headaches Drake.
“From the day I set my eyes on Tracy, even before she agreed to be my girlfriend, I told Samantha about her, and told her how unfair it would be to stay on with her when my heart was panting for another person.
“She has moved on, because she told me herself that she was going to choose out of the numerous suitors that have been falling over themselves to marry her, so I wonder why you won’t let me breathe and think of how to get my Tracy in my house as my wife” Bruce said, his voice beginning to sound àngry.
“Which Samantha? Which moved on? Is it not the same Samantha that called me yesterday to ask me if you have truly married the village girl? And to know if there was still hopes of getting you to consider getting back with her?” Drake asked his friend.
“Well, maybe she just wanted to meet the bush girl that swept me off my feet.
“I’ll remember to let her see Tracy when I bring her home by weekend” Bruce said with a chuckle.
“But Bruce…” Drake began but Bruce cut him off.
“Whatever you do Drake, don’t mention my woman again tonight. I have tried so hard to refrain from hitting you.
“If you mention her again, I may not remember that you’re driving” Bruce threàtened his friend, balling a fist.
“Calm down! I wasn’t going to talk about her. I just wanted to ask how you intended to cope with the extra spiritual problems you are planning to bring to yourself.
“Have you finished facing the ancestral bondages and generational curses in your family, that you want to add this one?” Drake asked.
“No Drake. I haven’t tackled anyone, that’s why I wish to get them all assembled, and thrown away once and for all.
“Spiritual problems, my foot!” Bruce said, and the two friends began to laugh.
They changed the topic, and talked about other things because Drake could see in clear terms that Bruce wasn’t likely to shift grounds.
Meanwhile, back in Tracy’s village, her mother was preparing everthing she needed to go to the shrine the next day.
Everything was put in place, and when they woke up the next day, Tracy wasn’t allowed to utter any word to any human, until she got to the shrine.
Her mother brought out a piece of coconut frond and placed between her lips, to signify that she was ready to proceed to the shrine.
She was meant to tie just a red piece of clothing over her chest and carry a special calabash on her head, as she walked there, so she cleverly and discretely tucked her phone into her pant, before she tied the wrapper.
No one was allowed to accompany her to the shrine, and she was to stay in the shrine with the chief priest alone, because it was believed that while the chief priest performed the special rituals that would liberate a person, anyone who dared appear there, would get double of the affliction of the one being cleansed.
Tracy stood in front of the shrine, waiting for the chief priest to perform the initial ritual, that would make her fit to enter inside the shrine.
The chief priest got up from his sacred stool, picked up some alligator pepper, and walked towards her.
He made some incantations before he encircled her head seven times with the items in his hands.
“Come in now, pretty one” he said, walking ahead of her.
